BECOME A VOLUNTEER
As mentioned, working with children who have suffered abuse, neglect and/or abandonment can be difficult for all involved. We train volunteers well in order to make sure that it is a rewarding experience for all. We want our volunteers to feel comfortable and prepared for the meaningful journey ahead.
For those who are interested and are seeking additional information, we host informational meetings. The informational meeting provides prospective advocates with all of the information needed to help decide if becoming a CASA is right for you. You will also have the opportunity to ask any questions that you may have about the program. We will do our best to provide answers to any question posed. If you are interested in attending an informational meeting, please visit our GET INVOLVED page. You may also contact us at [email protected]
or 636-789-1766 with additional questions.
CASA volunteers are responsible for becoming sometimes the only stable person in the child's life. Volunteers also work with the entire family support team (attorneys, caseworkers, GAL's, juvenile officers, counselors, teachers, biological family and foster family) in order to determine what is in the best interest of the child. The volunteer then shares this information in court so that the judge can make the most informed decision. It is important that someone advocate for the child when they may not be able to speak for themselves. Since this is of utmost importance we ask that prospective volunteers meet the following basic requirements:
Qualifications:
- Age 21 or older
- An open minded, caring citizen who shares the CASA of Jefferson County
vision that every child should live in a safe and permanent home.
- Complete the CASA of Jefferson County application and
participate in a screening interview.
- Pass criminal and child abuse/neglect background checks
- Have regular access to email as a means of communication
and internet access for training
Commitment:
- Make a commitment to remain with the case until permanency is achieved
- Complete CASA training & courtroom observation
- Dedicate 6-10 hours a month to information gathering, team meetings,
court hearings, visits, etc.
- Flexibility to attend court hearings and meetings scheduled during the day,
which are typically scheduled at least three months in advance.
-Must maintain the professional relationship between CASA and agencies, attorneys,
and the court system while advocating for the child's interests.
